My Gauld Nurseries Experience

1. Why I Went to Gauld Nurseries

We discovered Gauld Nurseries on a recent trip to Niagara Falls.

My husband and I were on a trip to Niagara Falls and wanted to do something a bit different. We love plants, so we decided to check out some local nurseries. I googled "Niagara Falls Nurseries" and Gauld was one of the top hits. It was a short and scenic drive from our hotel, and it was definitely worth it.

2. What I Loved About Gauld Nurseries

Unique Location

Gauld has a truly unique location and setting.

Gauld Nurseries is unlike any other garden center I've visited and I have visited a lot of garden centres. They are actually located on the Niagara Escarpment Biosphere Reserve, Recognized by UNESCO. I saw this very interesting fact on their website. The main building's balcony, draped with gorgeous purple wisteria, reminded me of a southern plantation home.

I loved walking around Gauld Nurseries. It was extremely beautiful.

The plants are displayed in picturesque settings throughout the property, making it feel like a botanical garden. Walking through the winding paths and walkways, you can explore a vast selection of trees, shrubs and other plants, both rare and more familiar varieties.

High-Quality Plants

The plants at Gauld Nurseries are very high quality and the prices are reasonable.

You can immediately tell that the plants at Gauld Nurseries are of a much higher quality than those that you often find at other locations, especially the garden centres at the big box stores.

I also appreciated that they offer not only smaller size plants, but more mature ones so you don’t have to wait so long to get a full-grown, fully mature specimen.

Even though they offer high-quality plants, their prices are very competitive.

Great Staff

The staff at Gauld Nurseries can answer all your questions.

The knowledgeable staff were always happy to answer our questions and offer helpful suggestions. They were available if I needed to ask a question, and they let me browse without bothering me.

I like to take my time when I’m shopping, especially for plants, so I don’t like to be constantly asked if I need assistance. The staff at Gauld were intuitive enough to give me space, but also there when I needed help.

Wonderful Gift Shop

I was also impressed by the great gift shop with a variety of unique pots and other interesting items. It's a great place to find one-of-a-kind gifts or to treat yourself.

3. What I Bought at Gauld Nurseries

I just had to buy something form this unique garden centre.

We didn't plan on buying anything, but Gauld had so many unique plants at reasonable prices that we couldn't resist. We had to limit ourselves due to the space in our car, but we managed to bring home a few treasures.

Ornamental Grasses - Golden Sunset

My amazing ornamental grasses I bought from Gauld Nurseries.

I'd been looking for ornamental grasses for my garden. This was a genre of plant that I hadn't considered incorporating into my designs in the past. I'm a colour person so I tend to gravitate towards flowering plants.

However, Gauld had a huge selection of ornamental grasses that caught my eye, and I found a variety called "golden sunset" that I absolutely loved. The containers were large, and the plants were very healthy. We bought two to plant in our front flower bed. These plants have thrived in this spot.

Japanese Anemone

My beautiful Japanese anemone from Gauld Nurseries.

We were going to just stop to buy the two grasses, but then we noticed a very unusual plant, a Japanese anemone called September Charm. My husband remembered having anemones in his childhood garden in Scotland. He said that it brought back some special memories, so I had to purchase it as well.

The bonus is that this particular perennial is a late summer bloomer. Most of the perennials in our garden are spring and early summer bloomers, so this particular plant would give us some much-needed colour from late August right through to the end of September. I have to say that this is one of my favourite plants in my garden now.

I love how many blooms this plant gives and that it is a late summer bloomer.

It has literally exploded in size. I'll need to divide it up next year as it is not too large for its original spot. This anemone is covered with striking pink flowers with golden centres. It's such a happy-looking plant and it brings a smile to my face every time I look at it.

I wish I lived closer to Gauld Nurseries! It's a hidden gem that I highly recommend to anyone who loves plants.

4. Bonus: Plant Care Tips for the Plants I Bought

Caring for Golden Sunset Ornamental Grasses

My ornamental grasses are very easy to take care of.

Golden Sunset ornamental grasses are a low-maintenance and visually striking addition to any garden. Here's how to care for them:

Planting:

  • Plant in the spring or fall in well-drained soil.

  • Choose a location with full sun to partial shade.

Watering:

  • Once established, Golden Sunset grasses are drought tolerant.

  • Water deeply during dry periods, especially in the first year after planting.

Fertilizing:

  • Fertilize annually in the spring with a balanced fertilizer.

Pruning:

  • Cut back the old foliage to the ground in late winter or early spring.

  • This will encourage new, healthy growth.

Dividing:
